Kits + Resource Connection for San Diego's Refugee Community

This fall, our San Diego Chapter received a $1,000 microgrant from Kids4Community (K4C) to address healthcare access gaps in our local community. We used these funds to assemble over 350 care kits for unhoused individuals across the city.

Each kit was packed with essential hygiene and first aid items. We included emergency thermal blankets to provide warmth during cold nights, individually wrapped body wipes for personal hygiene, mini toothpaste and toothbrushes for dental care, and triple antibiotic ointment packets for wound care. The kits also contained sunscreen for sun protection, reusable grocery bags for carrying belongings, and mesh zipper pouches for organizing personal items.

Beyond supplies, each kit included a resource map highlighting the nearest locations for legal aid, food drives, shelters, and other community services. These maps help connect individuals to the support systems already available in San Diego.

Our team spent weeks sourcing supplies, coordinating volunteers, and assembling each kit by hand. We distributed them through local shelters and community organizations that work directly with unhoused populations in San Diego.

We're grateful to K4C for believing in our vision and providing the resources to make this project happen. This microgrant allowed us to meet an immediate need while building stronger connections within our community. When young people are given the tools and support to lead, they can create real change in their neighborhoods.
